Professional bio
John Gray specialises in cases at the interface of law and medicine, primarily undertaking high-value personal injury and clinical negligence work. He has been a member of Chambers since 2003, having previously worked in law firms in Sydney, Australia, and in the legal department of HM Customs & Excise.
In 2009, John co-founded one of the first Legal Disciplinary Practices in the country, acting as co-Managing Director for ten years while maintaining his practice at the independent Bar. He is public access qualified and one of the few barristers nationally authorised to conduct litigation, giving him unique insight into how solicitors run cases.
John is also a Civil Mediation Council Accredited Mediator, having trained with the Academy of Experts and the University of Central Lancashire. He holds several part-time judicial appointments and has been recommended in the Legal 500 every year since 2021 for personal injury.

John undertakes complex and high-value personal injury claims, including brain injury, amputations, chronic pain, and disease litigation, with claims often valued at £1 million or more. He has significant expertise in fraud allegations, ancillary litigation, and managing expert medical evidence.
In clinical negligence and medical law, John’s practice covers surgical and pharmaceutical negligence, misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis, inappropriate treatment, and lack of consent. He has also defended before the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service and acted in multimillion-pound claims such as catastrophic birth injury cases.
John is regularly instructed in professional negligence claims, particularly against solicitors and surveyors, often involving complex causation and limitation issues. Notable work includes representing over 100 householders in the “leasehold scandal” litigation.
His experience as co-founder and director of a law firm gives him unrivalled expertise in costs litigation. He advises on and represents parties in cost budgeting, assessments, QOCS disputes, solicitor-client disputes, wasted costs, and misconduct-related costs orders.
As a mediator, John draws on decades of litigation, management, and judicial experience to help parties resolve disputes. He is a member of the Society of Mediators and sits on its Mediator Panel.
